New residents land in Wirraway

Wirraway residents meet their new neighbours.

One of the newest developments in the Hunter region has officially welcomed its first residents over the weekend, with a ‘Welcome to Wirraway’ barbeque taking place at the picturesque Wirraway in Thornton.

Backed by award-winning developer Defence Housing Australia (DHA), Wirraway draws inspiration from its natural surrounds to create a community that promotes sustainable living, healthy lifestyles and social interaction.

With stage one now nearing completion, the community event saw the first families to call Wirraway home come together to enjoy a barbeque lunch, while the kids were kept entertained on the jumping castle.

‘It’s important to foster a sense of community from the beginning and encourage residents to get outdoors and interact with their neighbours. It was great to see everybody making new connections and sharing their stories,’ said DHA Acting Managing Director, Jan Mason.

Future residents who have bought land in the development were also keen to meet their new neighbours, including Danniel and Emma who are planning to build their first home in Wirraway.

‘We can’t wait to move into Wirraway, I grew up around Thornton and just love the area—we’re really looking forward to having our own space and building a new home for our son,’ explained Danniel.

Wirraway is close to community facilities, shopping centres and schools and well-serviced by public transport. Future residents will be able to cycle the shared pathways, workout at the fitness stations or enjoy the aviation themed play equipment and half-sized basketball court.

The parkland neighbourhood will also incorporate more than 16 hectares of open spaces and parks, including rejuvenated natural wetlands that provide a haven for native flora and fauna.

As the only development in the region to receive a green tick of approval for environmental excellence, the contemporary housing will encapsulate innovation, best-practice building and sustainability.
